The ‘Motherland’ EP sees Simone Gatto taking centre stage for an EP that’s brimming with whimsical and atmospheric cuts.
Matters open with the title track, thoroughly menacing and expertly executed, its beefed-up low-end and relentless drum kicks make for a whirlwind start to proceedings.
The devil is in the detail on ‘November’. Just as its title alludes to, it’s another dark number and one that’s overweighed with hypnotic overtones and numerous portentous hues.
‘Scorpion’s skewed sound offers further example of Gatto’s penchant for unpredictability. Ironically, however, culminating effort ‘They Are Watching Us’ is the most conventional of the lot, with its warm, analogue design and bassline-led appeal leading the listener on another journey that’s fraught with further intensity.
Laced with contrasting measures of ambiance throughout, the ‘Motherland’ EP is an EP destined for the braver DJ.
